Elgin Middle School Choirs

Choir can be quiet scary for new singers. It is understandable to get stage fright when singing in front of friends and family for the first time. But if you follow the guidelines below, trust our teaching, and give it your all I guarantee that it will get much easier and you might have some fun on the way.

What are some of the classroom expectations?

1. EVERYONE HAS TO SING! Even if you don't have the best singing voice, everyone participates. The job of the choir director is to pull out the singing talent in all students enrolled in choir, but that cannot happen if you don't sing. Your daily grade comes from participating. 

2. No eating or chewing gum on the risers. Not only does it leave a mess, it is a choking hazard to sing while eating. 

3. Treat each other with respect and kindness. A choir can only be successful if all its members get along. If you have an issue with another chorister, please let Dr. Hughes know so we can work it out. Holding grudges, fighting, and arguing with other members hurts the entire choir.  

4. Follow all instructions given by the director or the choir officers. There are many of you and only one director. If you follow all instructions to the letter the easier things will be.

Do I have to participate in performances?

This is a performance based class, therefore performing in concerts, rehearsals outside of class, and at competitions are part of the grade student receive in class. If a student misses a concert or rehearsal, it must be made up with a make-up concert at a predetermined date and time or with a written assignment done as homework. 

 

Please note, certain competitions will have additional rules for participation which can effect participation. These rules will be discussed in class. Additional, Dr. Hughes reserves the right to dismiss students from participating in a competition for a number of reasons.

What will you need?

• Black 1 inch three-ring Binder

• $6.00 for a choir t-shirt

• Completely Black dress Shoes (black causal shoes will need approval by Dr. Hughes) 

• Black Dress pants or slack (Marcato Men's Choir Only) 

• Formal Concert black Outfit (Beginning Choir Only) 

  • Options for Girls Concert Black Outfit

    • Black Dress or skirt​

    • Black Slacks

    • Black Blouse 

  • Options for Boys Concert Black Outfit

    • Black Collared Shirt (preferably button up) ​

    • Black Slacks
